3 Simple Tips for Making Your New Year's Resolutions Stick

being there // Natalie McCormick on Tuesday January 12, 2016

We’re two weeks into the New Year; how are your New Year’s Resolutions going?  If you’re like 30 percent of Americans you may have already given up.  But don’t feel bad, just 8 percent of people will achieve their New Year’s Resolution this year.  Maybe you want to lose weight, or spend less money and more time with family.  Change is difficult, so to help you become part of that 8 percent, here are some tips for making your New Year’s Resolutions stick.

  1. Simplify
Don’t attempt an extreme makeover on yourself.  Rather, set small, tangible goals.  When you have a laundry list of goals, it’s a lot easier to abandon them.  Plus, it’s psychologically taxing.  And make sure your goals are attainable.  It’s good to be ambitious, but your ambitions should be buffered with reality. Be specific in your goal setting – if your goal can’t be measured, you’re not likely to achieve it.
  2. Take Your Time
It’s been said that it takes 21 days to form a habit, but that’s not the case for everyone. Try not to get overwhelmed if you’re not seeing progress right away.  Break up your resolution into pieces and work toward each one over time.  Perfection is unattainable so keep in mind that drawbacks and missteps will happen.  The key is to not let them derail you from meeting your goals.  Don’t give up.
  3. Talk Through It
Share your resolutions with family and friends, or consider joining a support group to help you reach your goals. Having someone to share your struggles and triumphs with will help to make your journey less lonely and intimidating.  Plus, you may find people that have great strategies and their own tips for how you can be successful.

If you’ve already fallen off the wagon, don’t be discouraged.  We’ve all been there.  Hop back on using the tips and tricks listed above.  2016 is your year.  You’ve got this!
